Collaboration is key to chemical industry emissions reduction.
GIC’s participation in panel events at WEF26 and an interview of CEO Charlie Tan and Maarten Wetselaar, CEO Moeve, voiced the commitment and need by the chemical industry to find collaborative solutions to emissions reduction.
‘Driving Resilience: Circularity as Catalyst for Future Chemical Supply Chains’ moderated by Suzie Echevarria (SABIC) with panellists Hanane Mourchid (OCP Group), Atul Arya (S&P Global), Pattabi Seshadri (Boston Consulting Group), and GIC’s Global Projects Lead Ana Sofia Almagro, concluded circularity can be key to driving resilience in value chains and regional economies when all the components are aligned. To unlock circular chemical value chains the main levers were noted as regulation, investment and technical feasibility.
The secondary panel event moderated by Charlie Tan on ‘From Molecules to Markets: Advancing Chemicals value chains towards Net-zero ambitions’, focused on the challenges and solutions needed to ensure a scalable chemical industry to net zero. Panellists included Oliver Thorel (SABIC), Richard Haldimann (Clariant), Cate Hight (Bain & Company), Matthias Tauber (Boston Consulting Group). There was agreement by all to act together to create effective circular value chains to meet customer needs and industry routes lowering emissions.
The week in Davos also saw the coalition hold its AGM with recognition by member CEOs and senior leaders of the notable progress made over the past year and since formation in 2023. Including, the unique ability of GIC to provide an enabling platform for its members and partners to identify and deliver on a diverse range of projects with tangible pathways to circular and emissions reduction.
The AGM acknowledged after two years in post and since the formation of GIC, Richard Haldimann, Chief Strategy & Technology Officer at Clariant, transitioning as GIC’s Chair of the Executive Committee to a place on the Executive Committee. GIC thanked Richard for his leadership and to his continued contribution alongside his fellow members. Fiona Van Den Brink, Senior Director Innovation Platforms & Net Zero Technologies, LyondellBasel, was welcomed to the coalition as GIC’s new Chair of the Executive Committee. Also welcomed was Maarten Wetselaar, CEO Moeve, as the newly appointed GIC Advisory Board Chair.
